Advanced connectivity between units will be obtained partly through expressive logic protocol and partly through universalized hardware. Gendex software will run on every web-worthy machine.
The Gendex EPMO, DEXCOM's handheld organizer, has on it one high powered infrared port on the top, as well as an optical I/O port on the bottom end. The I/O port will be easily adaptable to USB for interaction with standard peripherals. Special versions could also have a barcode reader and magstripe writer on the top edge. The optical ports are designed to control various external devices.
The primary connection of the Gendex EPMO is not electrical nor is it optical - it is data radio to the internet.
